Current Conditions and Weekend Outlook

Current Weather Update

Good morning! It’s currently 12:30 a.m., and we are closely monitoring weather conditions from the JES Weather Center here at 10 News Weather Authority. We have showers moving through Henry County, with some isolated heavy rain near Martinsville. If you are in Ridgeway or just west of Martinsville, expect to see rain soon. Patchy fog and minor ground clutter are present across the NRV and Roanoke Valley, but this should clear as the evening progresses.

Overnight Forecast

As we head into the night, expect partly cloudy skies transitioning to mostly cloudy by 9 a.m. on Friday. There could be a few sprinkles or light drizzles, but overall, the majority of the region will remain dry to start Friday. Current temperatures are quite refreshing, sitting at 64°F in Whitfield and 66°F in Hot Springs, with Southside areas ranging from 71°F to 73°F. The Roanoke Valley is currently at 73°F, and Lynchburg is at 72°F. Temperatures are expected to drop steadily overnight, reaching between 63°F and 69°F by morning.

Friday’s Temperature Forecast

Friday’s high temperatures will be milder than today, with mid to upper 80s expected across the board. For specific locations, we anticipate Danville and Lynchburg to both reach 89°F, while Roanoke should hit around 88°F. Enjoy the slightly cooler conditions before the weekend heat kicks in.

Upcoming Weather Patterns

Looking ahead, low pressure to our north and west, combined with high pressure to our south and east, is creating a flow pattern bringing more moisture into our region. By Saturday, we expect increased chances for rain. This pattern is typical in winter but oriented differently; now, we’re getting a stream of moisture from the south and west. Saturday’s rainfall could range from half an inch to one inch, with some isolated areas seeing even more.

Drought Conditions and Rainfall Outlook

Our region is currently under a severe drought, which has expanded to cover almost the entire viewing area. This rapid-onset drought started a few weeks ago, and we are still feeling its impacts. Thankfully, our seven-day forecast includes rain chances each day. Temperatures will remain in the mid to upper 80s, with next Friday potentially reaching 90°F.
